The piece has the Mimosa Manul character I've been doodling a while and I did this as a gift to a friend who was the actual inspiration of the manul and who has fond MOTU memories :)

Well since I'm nowadays slow with posting... Might as well do an inventory on sketchbookpages. These are once again collages of doodles and scribbles from random sources that I find fun to put together on same pages, sometimes finding new and surprising relationships between them :)

Hey, a quick post with some random collected doodles from scraps of paper or digital and a few #Sketchcrawl ones.

I don't have a properly working scanner atm so that's kind of hindering me from my old habit of scanning doodles in sketchbooks and note papers... Still resisting going totally digital :P

These are bg characters from the great animation series Gigglebug I'm working on as a Story and Layout artist. I just thought they are great and create happy mooood!

Digital doodle dump

Something else than life drawing for a change: doodlepages. I really haven't been doodling digitally as much as I should but that's gonna change soon I'm sure.

These are just collected random digital doodles I've had here and there. Most of them are just quickly trying a new brush or something.

Teen's oldie goldie samurai-ish

Phew time flies...when you have no or little free time etc. So it's been almost 2 months without a post.

Well there's no material of my own to post anyways...yet so that's why I dug out some OOOLD stuff! These stand as examples of certain influences a young sensitive artist confronted...which are in these ones obviously blade runner and samurais. Can't really get much clichéd than that! Ok Blade Runner obviously was influenced my samurais as well...hmm. There really isn't any original ideas out there anymore now is there?

The samurai is from high school I think. Testing those watercolors and inking with a brush. It looks like I've been inking with stick though.

The Deckard dragon is probably a bit older as I've been testing coloring with my airbrush which I bought with my confirmation present money, heh thanks Jesus!

But it was such fun to come across these oldies goldies in a box that I had to use them as CPR to the blog!

Hard vs. Soft - Peace vs. Agony

These life drawing modes contain a couple of my own recent favorites. The female model was this really calm young woman and a nice peaceful air to her and then as a contrast on another session there was this man who has to move around with sticks, making his moving look sometimes agonizing. He was tall and his body looked really strong but he still was limited in movement and expressing by motion. I was mesmerized by this and wanted to express this feeling in my drawings with the line quality, composition and forms. So I was again also pushing myself to draw something beoynd what I see and not get caught up on the "realistic".

It was fun and liberating to just feel the pen on the paper conveying what I felt and thought.

I think I got it on some of these but then again....it's such a subjective exprience that it always doesn't translate to others :)

Some are really quick 1 minute intuitive ones and some had more time to explore.

It's always painful the first time

Just a little picture I did related to a comic collaboration project that never got off the ground.

Heyhey,

this year will see more updates then last year, I'm sure of it!!

This post gathers - as usual - a lot of scribbles and random doodles from way back and then quite recent ones. Some are done in St. Petersburg, some in Vienna, some in London and some in Rio. The bigger pictures of beaches with palms etc were done at Ilha Grande, Brazil on a boat tour. Whenever the boat stopped briefly I sketched quickly some of what I saw. then there's some from the streets of Rio drawn as I saw them as a glimpse from the car...like my social commentary picture "the Visible Man" :)

Then there's doodles (brown paper) from the last Sketchcrawl I attended earlier last year.

Duudson doodles

Now something a bit different. A bit of my random freelancing work stuff. The photo is taken at the supermarket (by my gf Pia) of some Dudesons sweets that I did the black and white line illustrations for. Included is also a group pose meant to be used in the store marketing materials. It's also showing the 4th Dudeson HP who has his own candy too but not featured in the photo.

How To Train Your Selfportraits

I was traveling by train late evening yesterday. I of course went to the restaurant for a couple of beers. The darkening winter night was behind the window, the train was shaking and I decided to do draw something that I rarely do - self portraits.

Quite revealing.

I've been workin my ass off in my dayjob and doing freelance stuff. I'll have to do some posts of sketches of them.

Crawling scribble peeple

While going to a party elsewhere, I quickly participated to the international Sketchcrawl day. Here's info on it:
What is a "SketchCrawl"?
In short, roughly every 3 months we put a call out to people around the world to join in, put pen to paper on a given day for as long as they can (be it 20 minutes or 8 hours) drawing, sketching, journaling about their day and what's around them. For a day, slow down, look around you, see ... and draw or write. Record your day. No specific level of skill is expected ! Anyone is welcome.

So I sat into a cafe in the middle of busy Helsinki, grabbed a cappuccino and a bun. I sat there for a generous half an hour and alongside sipping the brew I made some quick glances and scribbled the impressions down. It was good exercise again..need to do that more often.

I see doodle people

Heyheyhey, back with some collected doodlings. The oldest in this bunch are from around 2009 from a sketchbook I've forgotten that I had.

Also in this post I included some caricatures I made of people during the Kuvita! 1st Nordic Illustration Festival which I helped to organize too. On sunday I was just supposed to sit in the cafe of the Design Museum and draw people there. Some of them asked specifically to be drawn and some I just drew silently. I took photos of the drawings since the originals ended up in Kuvittajat Ry archives...

The interesting part was that I had promised to do this 'cause there didn't happen to be anyone else available for that specific time slot aaaand that I really haven't done caricatures before. Of course I've done lifedrawing but this was something totally different.

I know that they're not caricatures in the sense that they would be funny or looking exactly like the subject. But certainly this was excellent practice of observation and trying to find the essential with sometimes just a few seconds glance at someone..

Click for bigger view with the collected doodles. Some of them I could have just thown to the bin (as I did after scanning) but I find it nice to preseve them somehow to see development if any. Also they can spring up ideas later on for "better" drawings.

With our powers combined...

I thought that I should in the future combine more of the lifedrawings and sketches. So that I won't choke the blog with every poor pose drawing from every session. Because there tends to be a lot of crap but I guess that's the idea, to get it out of your system.

In this post those character sketches were done for an unrealized project (on my part). In a tight timeframe I tried to do characters of different styles (mood, period, technique whatever) under a loose Xmas theme. I know I could have gone more overboard with them but decided to play safe. I have to get rid of that mindset... I like the sketches more than the colored versions.

Look mum I doodled

Yeeeaaaaaaah...I still draw, which is good that I have kept the equipment and kept practicing. Soon I have to decide what I really want to draw.

When I have time for that I mean. One thing I need to do soon is to give this blog a proper design. It's kinda embarrassing for a "world renowned graphic designer" to go on with the default template. I won't even mention my "portfolio" site...it's purely utilitarian at the moment and even sucks at that kkrrhhm! Have I mentioned User Interface design as my competence at some point? But of course for REAL jobs it's a different game and yes let's face it, motivation. Oh no not motivation I have that but concentration..

That part is rarely lying on the home desk. Where could I buy some?

Sooo yes about this post? Well you know it already, random stuff. Doodles schmoodels in all shapes and sizes and styles I strive to vary. I think I'm just not fit for picking one style and sticking with it. No matter what the "How to be an illustrator" -books say. Of course now some friends will say "I can identify your drawings!" Yes granted, it's impossible to completely escape your "line" (and mannerisms!) but still I beg to differ that there ain't one style or characters that I would have polished to my kind of diamond.

I just have a bunch of dirty cole pieces lying around! But I really am a firm believer what the good ol' John K. has said that once you get the basics good in your drawing and design sensibilities, there's nothing you can't do.

Dr. Doodle's orders

As Dr. Doodle orders, keep the pencil moving, yes...I try to do that.
